Although there exists a significant corpus of literature describing how urban gangs can be involved in various forms of illegal economic activity (e.g., Bourgois 1995 Contreras 2012 Hagedorn 1988 Padilla 1992 Sánchez-Jankowski 1991 Spergel 1995 Venkatesh 2000), one of the most important recent contributions is undoubtedly Steven Levitt and Sudhir Venkatesh’s (2000) famous analysis of the finances of a drug-dealing gang in Chicago. ![]()
